US Vice President Kamala Harris Warns of Consequences for Israeli Offensive in Gaza
Vice President Calls for Ceasefire, Urges Restraint by Israeli Forces
WASHINGTON - Vice President Kamala Harris on Sunday did not rule out consequences for Israel if it moves forward with a major ground offensive in the southern Gaza Strip.
Harris, speaking to reporters in Washington, said she had spoken to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and conveyed the Biden administration's "deep concern" about the possibility of a ground invasion.
"We have communicated directly to the Israelis that we have serious concerns about the potential for a broader conflict," Harris said. "We have urged them to do everything they can to avoid civilian casualties and to protect innocent life."
Harris's remarks came as Israeli forces continued to pound Gaza with airstrikes, while Hamas and other Palestinian militant groups fired hundreds of rockets into Israel.
The violence has raised fears of a full-scale ground invasion by Israel, which would likely lead to even greater bloodshed.
Harris said the Biden administration is "actively engaged" in diplomatic efforts to de-escalate the situation and bring about a ceasefire.
"We believe that a ceasefire is the only way to end the violence and protect innocent life," Harris said. "We will continue to work with our partners in the region to achieve this goal."
